What is Dengue Fever: Symptoms, Treatment & Care ?

Dengue Is Caused By:

It is a viral fever transmitted by the bite of a Dengue Mosquito i.e. an Aedes mosquito infected with a dengue virus . Occur usually in post monsoon period when breeding of mosquitoes is highest due to accumulation of rainwater.

Dengue virus:

Dengue virus (DENV) is a mosquito-borne, single positive-stranded RNA virus of the family Flaviviridae.

Dengue Diagnosis Test:

Dengue Symptoms:

Symptoms of Dengue (Some time called as Dengue Fever) can be mild or severe. Symptoms of dengue usually last for 2–7 days. Patient will recover after about a week. The signs and symptoms of dengue fever are similar to some other diseases, such as typhoid fever and malaria. i.e.

• High fever,
• Severe joint and Muscle pain,
• Eye Pain (typically behind the eyes)
• Exhaustion,
• Rash
• Swollen lymph nodes ,
• Headache
• Nausea/Vomiting

Dengue Treatment:

In 2019, the FDA approved a vaccine called Dengvaxia to prevent the disease from occurring in aged 9 to 16 who have already been infected by dengue. But, there currently is no vaccine to prevent the general population from contracting it.

There is no specific treatment so for symptomatic relief doctor suggests combination of treatments such as:
1) Over The Counter (OTC) medication used for symptomatic relief for fever, pain Such as paracetamol .
2) More severe forms of dengue fever may require intravenous (IV) fluid supplementation, if the person cannot take fluids by mouth .
3) Patients with severe dehydration blood transfusion may be required.
4) Taking crushed Papaya Leaves juice helps in increasing the platelet count and reduces the symptoms of fever.

Dengue Prevention and care:

• Use mosquito repellent indoors and outdoors.
• Wear long-sleeved clothes & socks.
• Use mosquito nets while sleeping in open area.
• Don’t let water to store for long duration in open.
• Make sure window and door screens are secure and free of holes.
